Ten "18 Varke" gang members have been sentenced to lengthy jail terms for stabbing a young man to death outside a Humansdorp nightclub.

The Humansdorp Regional Court on Thursday sentenced the men for the murder of 25-year-old Jason “Yskas” Heynes.

Heynes was stabbed multiple times in Jacob Street, Arcadia, on November 19 2022.

He later died from his injuries.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said two of the accused, Tyrone Williams, 22, and Bradley Moses, 27, were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Six others — John Breda, 21, Juvandre Witbooi, 24, Breyton Geswint, 21, Whayvaun Booysen, 21, Baron Moses, 21, and Bkorn De Jong, 21 — were each sentenced to 23 years’ direct imprisonment.

The final two accused, who were minors at the time of the murder, also received direct jail terms, Nkohli said.

Twelve men were originally arrested for the murder.

Two of the accused were later killed in separate gang-related incidents while out on bail.

Acting Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Brigadier Asogran Naidoo welcomed the sentences.

“Gangsterism is devastating communities, and this court ruling will definitely cause a huge dent in gang-related activities, especially in areas such as Humansdorp,” Naidoo said.
