Cape Town's Espressolab De Waterkant has been ranked among the world's top 100 coffee shops, a significant accolade that places the city on an international list of distinguished cafés.

The ranking was compiled by the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops.

It reviews coffee shops around the world based on quality, consistency, innovation and overall customer experience.

Thousands of cafés are considered, but only 100 make the final cut.

The De Smidt Street, Green Point café is known for its quality beans and well-made coffee.

It is also the second year in a row that it has made the list, after ranking 11th last year.

Espressolab said 15,000 coffee shops were evaluated this year.

"Our coffee director, Renato Correia, and our chief marketing officer, Ersin Kfeli, attended the award ceremony and received the award on behalf of Espressolab," it said.

James Vos, Cape Town's economic growth political head, said the ranking is something the city can celebrate.

“Anyone who knows me knows I don’t start my day without a proper cup of coffee, so this one is close to my heart," he said.

"To see a Cape Town coffee shop ranked 40th in the world is something we can all be proud of."

Vos said the achievement shows local businesses can compete on a global stage.

“It shows that our local businesses don’t just compete, they lead," he said.

"From a cup poured in Cape Town to global recognition, this is exactly the kind of success story that proves our entrepreneurs have what it takes to go world-class."

He said the city is working to support business growth.

“As the metro, we’re focused on making it easier to do business, creating the right environment for entrepreneurs to thrive and scale," he said.

"When a local brand earns international acclaim, it fills me with pride, because it means Cape Town is not just participating in the global economy, we’re shaping it."
