Emergency response launched after construction site collapse in Sea Point

An injured construction worker is lifted by crane to safety after a partial structural collapse at a building site on Main Road, Sea Point.

A partial structural collapse at a construction site on Main Road in Sea Point triggered a large-scale emergency response on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the corner of Main Road and Conifer Road, where part of a structure under construction gave way.

The Sea Point City Improvement District (CID) response team was first on scene and alerted the control room, activating an emergency rescue operation.

Metro Rescue, Fire and Rescue Services and multiple ambulance services responded and secured the area while emergency crews assessed the scene.

Several people were treated on site for minor injuries.

Two construction workers who sustained serious injuries were lifted from the building using a construction crane and brought down to the roadway before being transported to hospital by ambulance.

The exact number of people injured had not yet been confirmed.

Authorities remained on site on Tuesday as investigations into the cause of the collapse continued.
