Visitors to Table Mountain National Park began encountering new entry procedures on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, with digital identification checks introduced at two of its busiest access points.

South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed that visitor verification processes are being implemented at the Cape Point (Cape of Good Hope) and Boulders Penguin Colony entrances. The digital ID scanning system is intended to ensure accurate tariff application where locally discounted rates apply.

In an official notice, SANParks said: “Visitor verification processes will be implemented at selected high-volume access points at Table Mountain National Park.”

The agency also confirmed that indemnity forms are no longer required for general day visitors entering the Cape of Good Hope section or Boulders Penguin Colony.

However, indemnity forms remain in place at designated picnic and braai facilities within the park, namely Newlands Forest, Oudekraal, Silvermine and the Tokai Picnic & Braai Site. This requirement does not apply to open-access areas, Wild Card holders or Activity Permit holders.

SANParks added that “all personal information is managed in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA)” and thanked visitors and stakeholders for their cooperation as the updated processes take effect.

The changes come as visitor volumes to the park remain high, particularly during peak tourism periods. In previous reporting, Cape Argus has highlighted growing pressure on natural spaces in the Western Cape amid strong tourism demand, with calls from conservation stakeholders for measures that support both environmental protection and operational efficiency within key attractions.

SANParks’ latest move focuses specifically on tariff verification and administrative processes at selected gates, with no broader policy changes announced in the notice.
