The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to affect parts of the Western Cape on Monday, February 9.
The warning is valid from 12am until midnight on Monday, with showers and thundershowers forecast to develop from early morning over the Overberg and Cape Winelands.
According to SAWS, “some of these storms may become severe,” with the potential for flooding and large amounts of small hail. The weather service said rainfall accumulations of between 40mm and 70mm are possible, while more than 100mm may fall in isolated areas of the Overberg, although uncertainty remains regarding exact amounts and locations.
SAWS warned that the expected conditions could lead to flooding of roads and vulnerable settlements, as well as danger to life when crossing fast-flowing streams.
The forecast also includes the risk of hail and heavy downpours, which could damage vehicles and result in difficult driving conditions, particularly during intense rainfall. Major travel disruptions are possible, especially where falling trees block major routes.
Further potential impacts include losses to agricultural production and possible disruption to essential services in affected areas.
South Africa’s impact-based warning system uses colour-coded alerts to indicate the severity and likelihood of hazardous weather. A Yellow Level 4 warning signals moderate but potentially dangerous conditions, with the possibility of localised flooding, hail, lightning and travel disruptions, particularly in vulnerable or low-lying areas. While not the highest level of alert, it serves as a warning for communities to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
Residents in affected regions are advised to monitor official weather updates, avoid flooded roads and fast-flowing streams, and limit unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall. SAWS has indicated that further updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
