Hundreds of residents queued for employment and business support in Mitchells Plain this week as the City of Cape Town rolled out a Jobs Connect and Business Hub activation aimed at improving access to work and enterprise services.

The Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, joined City officials and business partners on site, engaging directly with residents on skills development opportunities, assisting jobseekers with Jobs Connect registrations and responding to small business queries.

“By bringing this activation to Mitchells Plain, our Jobs Connect and Business Hub officials can meet residents where they are and help them on the spot,” Vos said. “Seeing the long queues of people wanting assistance shows both the need for employment and business support services, but it also shows that Capetonians are eager to take up opportunities when they are made accessible.”

Hundreds of residents registered on the Jobs Connect digital platform during the activation, allowing them to immediately begin searching for employment opportunities in their local areas.

Vos said the City is focused on removing barriers that prevent residents from accessing economic support, particularly for those who may struggle to travel to central offices or navigate online systems without assistance.

He also highlighted strong participation in the City’s enterprise development programmes, noting that during 2025, about 5 816 participants registered for Business Hub workshops and training sessions covering topics such as tendering, procurement, pricing, marketing and supplier development.

“These are the key building blocks to help set up a business and scale operations, and it is incredibly encouraging to see such strong engagement from local entrepreneurs,” Vos said.

An international call centre operator, TP, was also present at the activation, where jobseekers were screened and guided through the recruitment process. Successful candidates will complete online assessments before undergoing training and starting work, Vos added.

Jobs Connect is a workforce development initiative of the City of Cape Town’s Economic Growth Directorate, designed to link jobseekers with employment opportunities and skills development through a digital platform. The programme has previously received external recognition for its use of technology to connect residents with work and training opportunities. In addition to its online platform, the City has increasingly taken Jobs Connect and Business Hub services directly into communities, allowing residents to register, receive guidance and access support at local activations.

Vos said similar activations are planned for other areas later in the year, with further details to be announced.

Residents who are unable to attend in-person events can register for Jobs Connect online, while information on Business Hub services and upcoming workshops is available through the City’s official platforms.
