Six Milnerton High learners have been expelled following a brutal bullying incident that shocked the school community and sparked widespread outrage after footage of the attack went viral.
The incident, which took place in October 2025, showed a learner being assaulted by a group of fellow learners, prompting urgent calls from parents and activists for stronger action against school violence.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed that the expulsions followed an internal disciplinary process conducted by the school and later supported by the department.
WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said: “The Head of Department has upheld the recommendation by the school governing body of Milnerton High School to expel six learners from the school following the outcome of the disciplinary processes.”
Hammond added that five of the expelled learners are in Grade 12, while one is in Grade 10.
Meanwhile, eight learners linked to the same incident are facing criminal charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Six adults accused have been appearing in Court 26 at the Cape Town Magistrates Court, while the two juveniles are being processed separately.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said: “They were released on bail and warned as they had fixed addresses, no previous convictions, no warrants of arrests or pending cases.
“The consultation with the victims and downloading of photographs are still outstanding.”
The case against the eight learners has been postponed to March to allow for further investigation involving photographic evidence.
