In a desperate plea for strength and support, a mother from Newfields Village, Hanover Park, is facing the unimaginable as her teenage son fights for his life following a tragic shooting.
Carmelita Wievers said, she is still struggling to understand what led to the shooting on Saturday, saying her son Teezin, 16, is fighting for his life in hospital and he remains in a critical condition.
In a Facebook post, she wrote: “Strongs my son and remember I love you.”
Wievers said: “Past three the morning he was shot through his head in Newfields Village and is currently fighting for his life. To tell you the truth I really don’t know what happened.
“He has a CT scan due because the bullet is still stuck somewhere in his head and he has a broken wrist from trying to protect his face from the bullet.”
The concerned mother admitted that the 16-year-old had been hanging out with the wrong crowd, however he is a friendly person.
When asked if her son was involved with gangsterism, she said: “He only hung out with them.”
She added: “He is a very friendly child known by everyone and always helps where he can. He is fondly known as Doma and he is the kind of child who will never say no and is very keen to do anything.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said that Philippi police attended to the complaint at about 3.45am.
Gwala said: “A 16-year-old boy sustained gunshot wounds, and he was taken to a medical facility for treatment. A case of attempted murder was registered for investigation. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, no arrest has been made yet.”
Hanover Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) Public Relations Officer Kashiefa Mohammed said that Newfields Village community needs to unite as it was a peaceful place for many years.
Mohammed said: “This is a gang-related incident. Newfields Village was a peaceful place for many years. But suddenly gangsters are taking over the village. The community needs to unite, take hands and combat this crime all over in Hanover Park.
“Our youth is dying every day. Only the people can bring this peace in the community of Hanover Park.”
