A Bonteheuwel man was gunned down on Wednesday morning in a chilling attack in which thugs allegedly handed him fruit before opening fire.

The deadly shooting on Keur and Kersboom Road comes amid an escalating gang war between the Fancy Boys and Americans.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said: “On Wednesday January 28, at around 6am, a shooting was reported on the corner of Keur and Kersboom Road in Bonteheuwel.

“Bishop Lavis police attended the scene and found the deceased laying on the street in front of a supermarket with a gunshot wound on his chest and back.

“According to reports, a grey motor vehicle stopped next to the deceased, and the occupants gave him fruit, before opening fire. The motive for the shooting is a subject of police investigation. A case of murder has been registered and transferred to detectives for further investigation.”

Local ward councillor Angus McKenzie said the shooting is linked to a targeted gang attack that took place on Tuesday in Karee Road.

He said: “We believe that this is closely linked to a shooting that happened on Tuesday where another adult male was shot and murdered.

“We received strong information over the last few days from residents in that area of a brewing fight between the Fancy Boys and Americans gang for drug turf in the area.”

He further confirmed that several suspects were taken into custody on Wednesday morning for questioning.

McKenzie added: “These individuals will be profiled and our hope is that it will be directly linked to the shooting so that a formal arrest can happen.

“We will continue to work with the community with them providing information and our teams acting upon it to ensure we nip these shootings in the bud.”
