Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis officially opened the upgraded Blue Downs Athletics Stadium on Tuesday, January 27, marking the completion of a major R30 million refurbishment aimed at boosting community sport and youth development.
The opening was attended by Francine Higham, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.
The wide-ranging upgrade includes a full replacement of the tartan running track, refurbished grandstands and change rooms, new shade trees, and extensive improvements to the steeplechase arena, triple and long jump facilities, hammer throw cage and javelin area.
“I’m thrilled to see how this upgrade turned out. The stadium looks beautiful and I know the people of Blue Downs and Mfuleni will enjoy it,” Hill-Lewis said. “We want all community facilities to be at this standard, and that’s what we’re working towards.”
He said the upgraded facility would also contribute to safer communities by providing young people with healthy and positive recreational opportunities. “This also contributes to safer communities, as youth have something healthy, physical and uplifting to do, instead of getting involved in the wrong crowd. We can’t wait for school kids and athletes from the area to hit this new track running after this major R30m upgrade,” he said.
Hill-Lewis added that the investment would help unlock opportunities for local schools and aspiring athletes. “For the residents of Blue Downs and Mfuleni, this upgrade means better opportunities for schools, communities, and most importantly, our talented young athletes to reach their full potential, backed by quality sports facilities.”
The refurbishment forms part of a citywide athletics upgrade programme guided by a 2021 Athletics Study, aimed at achieving SASREA compliance and expanding access to safe, high-quality facilities across Cape Town.
Higham said facilities such as Blue Downs Stadium play a vital role in youth development and crime prevention. “Facilities like Blue Downs Stadium play a critical role in keeping young people active, safe and off the streets. When communities have access to quality sports infrastructure, young people gain structure, mentorship and a positive place to belong,” she said.
She thanked City officials involved in the project and urged residents to take ownership of the facility. “This stadium belongs to the community and I call on residents to use it, respect it and protect it for generations to come.”
The stadium supports a range of partners, including Western Province Athletics, the Western Cape Education Department, and active local communities. The City’s Recreation and Parks Department has worked closely with sporting federations, clubs and schools to coordinate access to athletics facilities.
The Blue Downs facility has also been earmarked as a Regional Recreation Hub, with further upgrades planned in the coming years.
