Firefighters are continuing to battle a stubborn blaze at the Strandfoam premises off Broadlands Road in Strand, with the fire still not under control several hours after it was first reported.
As flames rage and thick smoke billows into the sky, emergency crews are working tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, raising alarm among local residents.
According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service, crews were alerted to the incident at about 3pm.
“We currently have 12 frontline resources on scene, including two specialised vehicles and more than 50 firefighters courageously keeping the flames away from nearby buildings,” Carelse said.
He confirmed that, at this stage, no buildings have been damaged. However, a strong south-easterly wind is once again hampering efforts to bring the fire under control.
Carelse said crews will remain on site until the blaze has been fully contained and extinguished.
He added that the South African Police Service has been called to the scene after some bystanders allegedly began stoning firefighters.
“We ask the public to please steer clear of the area and allow firefighters to focus on bringing the fire under control,” Carelse said.
No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains unknown.
