A father and his daughter miraculously escaped with their lives after their vehicle was dragged under a moving truck in Athlone.

The two were travelling in a Toyota Corolla on Klipfontein Road and near Hickory Road in Belgravia on Monday when the incident occurred.

According to a source from the Cape Argus's sister publication, Daily Voice, the driver misjudged the situation while attempting a U-turn.

The source said: “Apparently they wanted to make a U-turn and obviously they lost control and slid underneath the truck, but as they were sliding under the truck, the truck stopped.

“That is why the wheel didn’t go over that car, it happened from a side angle.”

A video that circulated on social media saw how the car was stuck under the truck and emergency services were able to pull the female passenger out of the Toyota.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said: “Athlone police registered an accident report following an accident on Monday, 2026-01-12 at 14:15 in Klipfontein Road, Athlone, between a truck and a Toyota Corolla.

“The driver of the vehicle aged 75 and a female passenger aged 39 were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.”

He added that circumstances surrounding this accident are under investigation.

Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness spokesperson Shimoney Regter said: "Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident.

"Upon arrival, two patients were assessed and safely transported to a Cape Town healthcare facility for further medical care."
