High-speed chase in Bonteheuwel leads to arrest of hijacking suspect

A 45-year-old man was apprehended during a dramatic high speed chase in Bonteheuwel after he was caught red-handed with the vehicle he had allegedly hijacked a vehicle in Parow. Police are hunting for the second suspect.

The suspect also sustained a gunshot wound during the mayhem.

Police spokesperson, Constable Ndakhe Gwala explained what had transpired on Tuesday.

“This office confirms that Bishop Lavis Police arrested a 45-year-old male suspect for attempted murder. The police were called to a scene in Justicia Street, Bonteheuwel, where they found a charcoal Suzuki Baleno that had been hijacked in Parow Valley yesterday afternoon, January 6,”Gwala said. 

“The suspect was apprehended by metro police after a high-speed chase and crossfire. According to reports, he was with a second suspect who fled on foot. Police observed that the suspect sustained gunshot wounds on his left hip and right knee. 

“He was taken to a medical facility for treatment. A search for the second suspect who is still at large is underway.”

Ward Councillor, Angus Mckenzie said the recent surge in gang-related shootings in the T-Block of Bonteheuwel is unacceptable and has placed innocent residents in direct danger.

“The ongoing retaliation cycle is reckless and is tearing at the safety of this community,”  he added.

“I can confirm that credible information received from residents led to the arrest of one of the shooters this morning.

“In a cowardly act, the suspect discarded the firearm while fleeing, but SAPS successfully recovered it. He will appear in court on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

“We will vigorously oppose bail. This individual represents a clear and ongoing threat to the T-Block.

“While the final decision rests with the criminal justice system, we will not relent in holding violent offenders accountable.

“Gangsters must know this, the community is speaking, law enforcement is acting, and Bonteheuwel will not be surrendered to violence.

“We will continue working with residents who are brave enough to stand up and help bring peace back to our streets.’
