Fire in Mossel Bay has stabilised as crews move into mop-up phase, but wind remains a threat.

Firefighting teams battling the wildfire in and around Mossel Bay say the blaze has stabilised in several areas, although unpredictable wind conditions continue to hamper containment efforts.

According to an update issued by Mossel Bay Municipality at 5pm, active multi-agency firefighting remains underway in Aalwyndal and surrounding areas, including Island View, Vakansieplaas and sections near the N2.

He added that the fire was no longer spreading and that mop-up operations were underway in several zones. Fire crews have since been able to move into gorges with hose lines to follow up on mop-up work — a significant development given the difficult terrain that has characterised the operation since the fire broke out.

Aerial firefighting operations continued throughout the day under the command of the Garden Route District Municipality and were effectively utilised until 5pm. Volunteer resources also proved critical. A grader and a JCB, both volunteered by Mossel Bay services, were deployed to assist in the creation of firebreaks, helping to limit the fire’s ability to jump containment lines.

Despite progress, firefighters continue to face major challenges. Strong wind gusts, rapidly changing wind direction and inaccessible terrain have resulted in flare-ups and spot fires, requiring constant monitoring and rapid redeployment of crews.

Access control was implemented in Island View, and motorists have been urged to remain patient and to follow the instructions of law enforcement officials. Klipheuwel Street in Aalwyndal was closed in both directions as a safety precaution.

To bolster overnight operations, additional support crews from Hessequa and George, as well as Working on Fire teams, have been secured to assist Mossel Bay and Garden Route District firefighters and volunteers during the night shift.

Authorities confirmed that no further injuries have been reported. Several domestic animals and wildlife have been taken to safety for medical care, with no serious injuries recorded.

Precautionary evacuations remain in place in parts of Aalwyndal, where elderly residents and nursing staff were relocated to ATKV Hartenbos as a safety measure. Emergency services have urged residents to stay alert, heed official updates and avoid affected areas where possible as firefighting operations continue into the night.
