A viral video showing a motorist being fined for littering in Cape Town’s CBD has led to an unexpected follow-up, shining a light on the role tour guides play in protecting the city’s image.
The incident occurred last week when a driver was filmed throwing litter from a vehicle in the city centre. Law enforcement officers quickly intervened, issuing a fine in line with municipal by-laws. The footage spread rapidly on social media, drawing widespread praise from residents and visitors who welcomed visible enforcement against littering.
On Wednesday morning, members of the City’s Law Enforcement Tourism Unit met with Aslam Benjamin, the tour guide whose actions helped draw attention to the incident. According to Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith, the encounter revealed a deeply personal story rooted in pride for Cape Town and its reputation as a global tourism destination.
Smith said tour guides often serve as ambassadors for the city, shaping visitors’ first impressions and experiences.
“Tourism is about more than attractions and scenery. It’s about the values we display and the standards we uphold,” Smith said.
Benjamin, who has worked in the tourism sector for several years, said irresponsible behaviour by a small number of people can undermine the hard work done to promote Cape Town as a clean, welcoming city.
The City said the viral incident underscored the importance of consistent law enforcement and public cooperation, particularly during the festive season when visitor numbers increase significantly.
Residents and visitors were again encouraged to report littering and by-law infringements, with officials noting that small acts of accountability can have a lasting impact on how Cape Town is perceived locally and internationally.
