The City of Cape Town is searching for two people involved in a heated littering incident in the Cape Town CBD after footage of the confrontation went viral on social media.

Details of the incident were shared in a social media post by JP Smith, who said the video shows a motorist throwing litter from their vehicle while stopped at an intersection.

A tour guide is then seen approaching the car, picking up the rubbish and returning it to the driver. However, the motorist allegedly throws the litter out again and makes obscene gestures towards the occupants of the tour bus.

Smith said littering is an offence under South Africa’s environmental laws and warned that, if identified, the driver could face a fine. He added that the vehicle involved may also be impounded.

Authorities are now seeking public assistance to identify the tour guide who attempted to intervene and the motorist seen in the video.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the City anonymously on 021 480 7700 or email [email protected].

The City has again urged residents and visitors to respect public spaces, warning that reckless behaviour undermines ongoing efforts to keep Cape Town clean and welcoming.
