The family of 23-year-old Feroza Solomons is heartbroken after she was tragically shot in the head, allegedly over a mere R30 debt.
The tragic incident unfolded early on Sunday morning at approximately 5:30am in the suspect's home on Surwood Walk, Hanover Park. A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this heartbreaking murder, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
In an emotional interview with the Cape Argus sister publication, Daily Voice, Feroza's aunt, who shares her name, broke down in tears as she remembered her niece as a sweet and caring young woman.
Police confirmed that a 31-year-old male was arrested in connection with the murder and will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.
The aunt said that Feroza was at the suspect’s home who lives across the road.
She explained: “We don’t know what happened or why she was shot, but apparently she was shot over her owing money, a R30.
“She was at his [the suspect’s] house but they were not dating because his girlfriend was there. We know him because we have been living in the same road for years. He was also in prison allegedly for murder.
“We are heartbroken as a family because why did he have to shoot her? He could’ve slapped her or hit her. But why kill her?
“She was not a troublesome or rude child, she was very humble and down-to-earth.
“She was alone, she had a twin but her twin passed away when they were about two years old and that makes it even more devastating for her mother, because she was the only girl among a lot of boys. It was devastating seeing her lie like that in a pool of blood. I don’t understand why he did it.
“We also lost my brother’s child to a gunshot wound to the head, but nothing came from that case. But we are not going to leave it like this again. We want justice, he needs to go to prison and cannot get away just like this.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed on Sunday that Philippi SAPS are investigating a murder.
Twigg reported: “Philippi police attended to a complaint of a shooting in Surwood Walk, Hanover Park, on Sunday morning, 21 December 2025, at about 5:30am, and upon arrival on the scene they found a 23-year-old female in the bedroom who sustained a gunshot wound to her head.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
“We can confirm that a 31-year-old male was arrested in connection with the murder will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.”
