Metro police officers came under attack in Leonsdale, Elsies River on Thursday afternoon when they got pelted with stones by children after trying to assist Fire and Rescue Services.
It was turmoil in Leonsdale with a large group of young people attacking authorities which resulted in a Neighbourhood Safety Officer sustaining a wound to the head and had to be taken to a hospital for medical attention.
Metro Police spokesperson Ruth Solomons reported: “The information at hand is that Metro Police Officers went into the area to assist their Fire and Rescue Services colleagues during an emergency.
“Officers were attacked by a large group of youths who pelted them with stones. A Neighbourhood Safety Officer sustained a head wound. He was treated on scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital for further medical attention. Area supervisory staff will open a case of public violence at Elsies River SAPS.”
In a separate incident, Hanover Park residents were waned to be vigilant as shots were fired in various areas and is allegedly linked to gangsterism.
Public relations officer for the Hanover Park Community Police Forum, Kashiefa Mohammed said that continuous shootings is a concern as it is festive season and school holidays.
Mohammed said: “It is a major concern and it is the silly season where everything happens. Hanover Park is a red zone and it is school holidays but there are constantly ongoing shootings and gang violence happening in our society.
“Today there was a shoot out all over Hanover Park and it does not stop.
“Our children can’t play or walk outside, these gangsters don’t even respect our women. Parents need to be vigilant and keep their children safe because these shootings are an ongoing thing but nobody is taking note of what is happening in our community. These gangsters know exactly when police change their shift because then the shootings starts.”
