Eleven Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) members have been arrested and charged with kidnapping, torturing and murdering a Manenberg man and the assault of his friends, whom they apparently interrogated.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that three of the AGU members are back in the dock on Monday at the Athlone Magistrates' Court for their formal bail application.
The eight remaining members are due back in court for their bail application on Thursday, December 19.The members are facing charges of murder, 4 counts of Assault GBH, 4 counts of kidnapping and 1 count of torture.
Lizzy Suping, IPID spokesperson said the members were arrested after a man identified as Wade Price, died following an interrogation relating to a shooting near the Athlone Magistrates' Court which saw two people dead.
Price allegedly complained of ear pain following the interrogation and questioning and collapsed and died. Price's post mortem, Suping said, came back as unnatural causes.
She said more details about their findings would become public once the trial commences.
The group made their first appearance on Friday, December 12, following their arrest on Thursday and was remanded for their respective bail applications.
"The case of 11 members of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit, accused of the alleged murder of Wade Price and the assault of his friends in Manenberg, last Thursday, has been remanded to December 15, 2025," she explained.
"It is alleged that the deceased died during the interrogation and questioning of possible suspects, as part of an enquiry into the murder that occurred near the Athlone Magistrate Court last week. Police alleged that the deceased complained of ear pain and collapsed.
"IPID's investigation determined that the deceased's cause of death was as a result of unnatural causes. More information will be revealed during the trial.
"The accused officers face a charge of Murder, 4 counts of Assault GBH, 4 counts of kidnapping and 1 count of torture." The case was remanded to December 15 in respect of accused 7, 9 and 11 for a formal bail application and again December 18 and 19 for the rest of the 8 accused."
