South Africans are expressing their disappointment upon hearing that the beloved Quality Street chocolates may have been discontinued locally. This decision threatens to disrupt a cherished festive tradition that has been part of many families' holiday celebrations for decades.
Quality Street has held a special place in South African homes during the festive season, with its colourful packaging filled with a variety of individually wrapped sweets.
The chocolates have become synonymous with Christmas, evoking cherished childhood memories and marking the beginning of the holiday festivities.
This week, social media buzzed with reactions after TikTok user @leeduruofficial posted a video expressing her shock and frustration at discovering that Quality Street is no longer produced or distributed by Nestle South Africa. She also highlighted ongoing customer complaints in recent years, noting that both the quantity and variety had noticeably declined.
“Quantity is a lot smaller, the variety is a lot less. You would get one purple sweet among a ton of plain toffees, for instance.” said Lee.
Her sentiments echoed those of countless fans who associate the brand with “December hospitality” - the family tradition of offering guests a sweet treat during family gatherings.
While Nestle South Africa has not issued an official statement explaining the alleged discontinuation, information surfaced on social media after a user complained about the taste of the chocolates. In response, the Quality Street X official page said the product had been discontinued by Nestle in South Africa.
The page also added that individual retailers were now importing the product into the market "which is why you can still find it".
