A nine-year-old boy and two people in their 20s were killed, while two others were wounded, in an apparent gang-related shooting in Mitchells Plain on Tuesday night.
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut said the shooting happened at about 8 pm in Viscount Street, Rocklands, when four gunmen opened fire on a house.
They are believed to have fired from outside before storming inside and continuing to shoot.
The boy, a 21-year-old woman, and a 26-year-old man died at the scene.
Two men, aged 51 and 36, were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
"Preliminary reports indicate that four unidentified gunmen opened fire on the premises before entering the house and shooting the victims," Traut said.
Traut said the Anti-Gang Unit is investigating and detectives are following several leads as the search for the suspects intensifies.
"[They] are pursuing several promising leads to track down the perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime."
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile condemned the attack.
“This cowardly and senseless act will not go unanswered," Patekile said.
"Gangsterism has no place in our society.
"We will not allow criminals to hold our communities hostage through fear and violence."
Patekile also warned gangsters who threaten the safety and well-being of communities: “Your days of terror are numbered.
"We are coming [for you], and we will ensure you face the full might of the law.”
