Probe into alleged rape of seven-year-old at Atlantis primary school

Police are probing an alleged sexual assault involving a seven-year-old girl at a primary school in Atlantis.

Police have confirmed the investigation into the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl at a primary school in Atlantis.

Cape Argus will not be identifying the name of the school in order to protect the victim.

It is understood that the alleged incident took place inside the school's toilets earlier this month.

Cape Argus has since reached out to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) on the matter and is awaiting feedback.

Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that the case was under investigation.

At this stage police have yet to confirm an arrest.

The alleged incident took place on November 7 and a case was registered a week later.

"This office can confirm that on Thursday, November 13  a case of rape was reported to the Atlantis SAPS for investigation. According to reports on Friday, November 7, a 7 year old victim was allegedly raped at a school in Atlantis.  This case was transferred to Milnerton FCS for further investigation.  investigations continues," Van Wyk explained.

Between October and December 2024, SAPS crime statistics recorded 99 rape cases in South African educational institutions (universities, daycares, etc.)

Separately, the WCED reported 454 incidents of general assault on school property between January and July 2025.

Nationally, rape was the top crime against children in 2022/23 (38.3% of all cases).
