Bloody Halloween weekend leaves six dead on Cape Flats

Two men were shot dead in Manenberg on Sunday morning, bringing a bloody Halloween weekend to a close on the Cape Flats.

The gang-related incidents claimed the lives of six people over the weekend, leaving five injured in gang hotspots Manenberg, Lentegeur, Kensington and Ottery. 

As people were preparing their Sunday lunch, gunshots rang out in Letaba Road Manenberg at about 11.45am. 

According to police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk, it was reported that a white motor vehicle randomly started shooting on the unsuspecting men. 

Two men aged 25 and 54 died on the scene due to injuries sustained while the third man was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Van Wyk said: “The suspects fled the scene in the motor vehicle in an unknown direction. The motive is believed to be gang-related. 

“Two counts of murder and an attempted murder have been opened for investigation. Investigations continues, no arrest as yet.”

Community crime groups were flooded with reports of gun violence at the weekend, with the bloodiest incident reported in Montrose Park and Mitchells Plain.  

Just after midnight on Saturday, two men were killed and three were injured as a party turned into a mass shooting in Tania Crescent.

Van Wyk confirmed that Lentegeur detectives are combing the crime scene in a bid to apprehend those responsible for the deaths of two men aged 21 and 23 and injuring three others aged 16, 29 and 31. 

Van Wyk said: “The victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel and the injured victims were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

“Two counts of murder and three attempted murders were registered for investigation.

“According to reports two unknown armed men entered the mentioned premises where a party was held and randomly started shooting at the occupants fatally wounding the deceased and injuring the others.

“The unknown suspects fled the scene and they are yet to be arrested. The motive for this attack is believed to be gang related.

“Following this shooting at Tania Crescent, a wendy house was set alight at a premises in Elizabeth Street. Montrose Park. Four suspects were subsequently arrested as they fled the scene and a case of arson and resisting arrest are being investigated. 

“It is unsure if both incidents are related. Investigations continue.”

Meanwhile, Kensington police registered a murder and an attempted murder following a drive-by on Saturday at 7.20pm in 18th Avenue, Factreton, where a 29-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded and a 37-year-old male was injured inside a car.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that Grassy Park police are investigating the murder of a a 55-year-old man, following a shooting that occurred in Onyx Court, Ottery on Saturday morning at around 4.02am
