The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has reported a violent incident at Pollsmoor Prison on Wednesday, leading to the deaths of two inmates and injuries to several correctional officials.

The disturbance began when a group of inmates attacked officers with knives.

In response, DCS personnel employed force to regain control of the situation. Calm has since been restored at the facility, and all injured individuals have been transported to hospital for medical treatment. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Police were called to the scene, and both SAPS and the Department will conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, condemned the attack and expressed his deep concern over the violence.

“Attacks of this nature are unwarranted and deeply saddening, especially when lives are lost,” he said.

The Department extended its condolences to the families of the deceased inmates and assured the public that steps are being taken to safeguard the wellbeing of both staff and inmates.

“The safety and stability of the correctional environment remain our top priority,” DCS said in a statement.

Investigations into the motive and events leading up to the altercation are ongoing.

Two months ago, violence also erupted at the Oudtshoorn Medium A Correctional Centre, leaving one inmate dead and several officials injured.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said at the time that inmates in Room 005 resisted a search, forcing officers to intervene. Contraband, including drugs and cellphones, was seized during the operation.

The following day, tensions flared again when inmates attacked officials during unlock time. Four staff members were hurt, suffering stab wounds to the face, head, and back.

One inmate later died despite receiving medical care. The incidents are still under investigation.

Last month, Thobakgale addressed ongoing concerns over security weaknesses in prisons. He said offenders involved in the attacks were moved to single cells, and follow-up searches uncovered additional weapons.

Thobakgale confirmed that management interventions had been introduced at Pollsmoor to restore order, strengthen oversight, and improve the safety of both staff and inmates. These measures aim to prevent similar violent incidents in the future.
