The grieving wife of Nathan Plato, a tow truck driver and father of five who was gunned down on Monday in Eerste River, said the family is struggling to come to terms with his passing.
Plato, 35 affectionately known as Spice, was shot inside his tow truck in Heather Park, Forest Drive, and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.
A murder case has been registered by Kleinvlei police and suspects have yet to be arrested.
His wife, Meagan said she was not sure why anyone would want to hurt her husband because he was caring and was well-loved in the community.
The grieving wife explained: “I can’t think of why anyone would want to kill him in that manner.
“At the time of the incident, I was at my mother’s house in Mitchells Plain. One of his friends phoned me to tell me the news.
“I could not believe it, it felt like my legs gave way from under me because before that we were still on the phone having a discussion about the children.
“He loved his children and would go out of his way for them, he would even lay his life on the line for them."
She said the family had suffered an immense loss: "In this life there is a lot of jealousy because he was very helpful, anyone could come to him and he would assist them. Everyone has their flaws but when it comes to people, Nathan always gave his best.
“We really lost a legend because of the impact he had on people’s lives.
I know it is painful because it is getting harder as the days go by. They are saying they hate the people who did this and the way they killed their father.”
His colleagues took to Facebook to pay homage, saying: “Nathan was more than just a friend, he was family to many.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Nathan’s family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him. He will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace.
“He was a huge part of the Time to Tow family, not just as a team member, but as a brother. His kindness, energy, and spirit will always be remembered and missed deeply by all of us."
