Police intercept truck carrying R19 million worth of drugs from Johannesburg to Cape Town

A Nigerian national has been arrested in Paarl during an explosive seizure of drugs worth R19 million which had been transported via a truck from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
Police spokesperson, Captain Frederick Van Wyk said the arrest follows an intelligence driven operation and that the truck was spotted near the Huguenot Tunnel.
A 44-year-old Nigerian national was arrested and is expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court soon on drug related charges.

“Significant seizure disrupts the supply chain of illicit drugs, protecting communities and supporting efforts to substance abuse,” he explained.
“This came about after a truck was stopped and searched on the N1 near the Huguenot tunnel, on September 30 2025 at 7pm..
“Police in Paarl follow up intelligence driven information about a truck that allegedly transported drugs from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The vehicle was spotted near the Huguenot Tunnel by members of the Paarl Highway Patrol, Boland K9 and Provincial Traffic.”
Van Wyk said when the team stopped the truck and searched it, they seized 55.8kg tik to the street value of R16, 367 814 and 30,5 kg cocaine to the street value of R3 863 435.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile applauded all those involved in the operation and seizure of the drugs.
