For Mamela Nontshakaza, a mother, netball coach, and entrepreneur from Nyanga, Cape Town, business was never part of a grand plan. Alongside her co-founder, Thembakazi Miller, she built Ezamaswazi Nonzaba Projects out of necessity, the need to support her family and create opportunities in a community where unemployment and poverty are daily challenges.
What began as a modest home-baking venture soon grew into a multi-service business, shaped by resilience, passion, and a determination to uplift others. Every step of the way, the duo learned and adapted, turning challenges into opportunities for growth.
Today, Ezamaswazi Nonzaba Projects offers far more than cakes. From custom bakes, celebration cupcakes, and their popular variety boxes to event décor hire, transport services, and bespoke packaging, the business is about creating experiences that bring people together. Their secret lies in sourcing only the best ingredients from local suppliers, ensuring that every product is high quality while also supporting the community.
The journey has already produced exciting milestones. The business is onboarding with Mr D to reach more communities, and recent product launches, including mini cakes and party stationery packages, have boosted sales and expanded their offerings.
“We have been able to train and employ two females. Our first kiddies’ baking class is set to take place on October 10, which is very exciting,” said Nontshakaza.
But at its heart, Ezamaswazi Nonzaba Projects is about more than business. Mamela and Thembakazi have a clear vision: to build a sustainable, community-centred enterprise that provides excellent products while creating jobs and developing skills for young people.
Co-founder Thembakazi Miller added, “We want Ezamaswazi Nonzaba Projects to stand as proof that small beginnings, when nurtured with determination, can transform lives. Our impact is rooted in empowering people, whether by making their special events memorable or by giving others a chance to earn and grow alongside us”.
