SANParks arrests suspects in Table Mountain National Park crime crackdown

. SANParks has enhanced patrols as hiking season begins.

The South African National Parks, SANParks, are hot on the heels of criminals hot on the heels of criminals operating on Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) and have arrested an armed suspect and a car thief within hours.

JP Louw: SANParks Head of Communications and Spokesperson said the first suspect was intercepted on Saturday, linked to breaking into vehicles and was caught red-handed and attempted to flee the scene.

“The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) Special Operations team successfully apprehended a suspect following a vehicle break-in along the Lion’s Head parking area,” he explained.

“While conducting a routine patrol in the vicinity, SEAM rangers witnessed a car break-in in progress. Upon noticing the rangers, the suspect attempted to flee on foot. A swift response was initiated, and a K9 was deployed.

“The K9 engaged in pursuit and successfully apprehended the suspect a short distance from the scene. Law enforcement was immediately notified, and the suspect was handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.”

Louw said vigilance was high as hiking season begins and requested that visitors avoid leaving valuables inside parked vehicles.

He added that enhanced patrols would continue in hotspot areas to ensure the safety of park users.

A day later, the Table Mountain National Park Sea, Air, Mountain team successfully intercepted a male suspect during a routine operation in the vicinity of Signal Hill - Pat's Track hiking trail. 

Louw explained that when approached, the suspect attempted to flee, he was seen discarding evidence into nearby bushes. 

“Rangers acted swiftly, preventing the suspect from escaping. A search of the surrounding area was conducted,” he stated.

“The suspect has been arrested and handed over to the relevant authorities for further processing.

“Park management commends the professionalism and vigilance of the ranger teams whose rapid response ensured the situation was contained without harm to visitors. 

“The park continues to prioritize proactive patrols, visible presence on trails, and rapid response measures to safeguard all who use the area.?

He further encouraged visitors to remain alert, report any suspicious activity on 086 110 6417, and take reassurance from the fact that dedicated ranger teams are actively working to maintain safety and security across Table Mountain. Safety of visitors remains the park’s top priority.
