The City of Cape Town has unveiled a new R13,7 million full-size synthetic soccer pitch at the Fisantekraal Sport Ground.
The milestone project is aimed at promoting active lifestyles, sporting opportunities and community engagement.
The City said the pitch forms part of the broader Fisantekraal Recreation Hub, which includes the Library, Recreation Centre and Social Development Hub.
According to officials it is set to create a central space for learning, recreation, social support and healthy living.
The hub supports seven netball clubs, with junior tournaments planned during school holidays.
They detailed that the programmes demonstrate the positive impact of accessible, high-quality facilities on fostering active, engaged and healthy communities.
Councillor Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health explained its prospects: “This new pitch is an investment in our youth, our community and our future. I’m calling on every resident to work with us to care for this facility by using the booking system so we can prevent overuse, picking up litter, reporting vandalism, and keeping it safe for future generations.
“We encourage the community to make the most of and protect this wonderful resource for all.”
Higham said the Fisantekraal Recreation Hub offers a range of programmes for the community, including after-school activities, girls’ futsal, netball, rugby, fitness, as well as seniors’ activities.
“Unlike traditional grass fields, synthetic pitches can withstand heavy use and remain playable throughout the year, even during periods of water scarcity. To maintain the facility’s longevity, community members are encouraged to adhere to the booking system,” she added.
The project was completed over 18 months and includes a full-size synthetic soccer pitch (in accordance with the PSL National Soccer League Handbook, 2023), player and spectator seating, fixed goal boxes with netting and a spectator wall and railing.
Ward Councillor Francois Berry said the pitch was ideal for sports clubs to thrive.
“To our local football clubs – this is your home ground. May it be where talent is discovered, where discipline and teamwork are strengthened, and where our young people are inspired to dream bigger and achieve more. To the community of Fisantekraal – this pitch belongs to you. Let us protect it, cherish it, and make it a lasting source of pride for generations to come.”
