Three people, including a nine-year-old child, were shot and killed in Kwazakhele, Gqeberha on Monday night.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the incident occurred in Malibale Street at about 7.40pm.
She said the other two victims were 40 and 65 years old respectively.
Their names were not immediately known.
Mawisa said police were called to the scene after community members reported hearing gunshots.
"A detective team from the provincial serious violent crime unit in Gqeberha is up on their heels in tracing suspects responsible for a shooting that claimed the lives of two women, aged 40 and 65 years, and a nine-year-old girl.
"The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 7.40pm in Malibale Street, Soweto on Sea, Kwazakhele.
"According to reports, Kwazakhele police were summoned to the shooting incident."
Upon their arrival, Mawisa said they received information from the community that gunshots had been heard.
"The community members found the bodies of the two women and one child inside the house and alerted police," she said.
"Three victims were declared dead on the scene by medical personnel."
Mawisa said three counts of murder were under investigation.
"The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear and will form part of the ongoing investigation," she said.
"Police will stamp their authority in ensuring that those involved are apprehended.
"They will leave no stones unturned without apprehending suspects and confiscate any weapon used in the commission of crime."
