Police have nabbed two suspected hijackers in Khayelitsha while they were armed.

The police’s Maitland Flying Squad was carrying out patrols in the Khayelitsha policing precinct on Tuesday, August 26, when they received information about a hijacked Suzuki motor vehicle.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said the team followed up on the information which led them to Ntanga Street in Lwandke  where the suspects tried to flee the scene but were swiftly apprehended.

“The members used their available resources and located the vehicle near Ntanga Street in Lwandle at 8.20pm,” he said.

“The suspects sped off in different directions when they saw the patrol vehicle approaching. “The police members in pursuit apprehended one of the men, searched him and recovered a pistol with ammunition.

“The tenacity of the police members led to the detention of a second suspect and they were detained both for the possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and one on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

“Once charged the suspects are expected to make their court appearance in the Strand Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges.”

The arrest comes just a week after the police apprehended two suspects aged 16 and 18 for attempted murder and attempted hijacking after an alleged attack on MPs Ian Cameron, Nicholas Gotsell and Lisa-Maré  Schickerling in Philippi-East.

The group were carrying out a police oversight visit at the Philippi Training College when they came under siege with bricks and sustained injuries.

Cameron had to undergo dental surgery while Gotsell suffered a fractured skull and Schickerling had an injury to the head.
