Minibus taxi driver dies in collision with Golden Arrow bus in Philippi East
The driver of a minibus taxi died and two passengers transported to a medical facility after the taxi allegedly jumped a red traffic light and crashed into a Golden Arrow bus on Sheffield Road in Philippi East on Monday morning.
It is alleged by the Golden Arrow Bus Service (Gabs) that the taxi jumped the red robot and collided with the bus that was not carrying any passengers at the time.
Gabs spokesperson, Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, said the bus departed from the depot at the time of the accident.
“According to the information available to us, the driver of the third-party vehicle allegedly jumped the red robot causing the third party to collide with our bus.
"We are deeply saddened to share that the driver of the third-party vehicle passed away at the scene.
"Our bus had just departed from the depot and was not carrying any passengers at the time,” Dyke-Beyer said.
Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said a culpable homicide case has been opened and is under investigation.
"The driver of the minibus taxi was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while two passengers were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation," said Twigg.
Police are appealing to anyone with any information about the incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.
