Following delays due to poor performance by the previous contractor, the City’s Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate has announced that upgrades to the Sea Point promenade and Granger Bay parking area have been completed.

Upgrades to the tune of R41 million came to a grinding halt last year, setting the completion date back by more than a year.

Work started in May 2024 for the construction and restoration of the beachfront areas, which include the upgrading of the Granger Bay parking area, construction of a rock revetment, a new Fort Road play park, additional walkways, coastal vegetation and lawn planting, installation of interpretive signage to give heritage information, and public art in the Sea Point Library.

City Deputy Mayor and mayco member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews, said completion of the footway and coping at the Rocklands Beach is still due for repairs in the coming months, pending a structural assessment of the concrete slab supporting the footway.

"We thank residents for their patience while the works were under way and apologise for the prolonged construction period. Residents from across Cape Town can now enjoy the newly upgraded Granger Bay parking area and landscaping. The completion of the footway and coping at the Rocklands Beach is still due for repairs in the coming months pending a structural assessment of the concrete slab supporting the footway. We will keep residents informed of the progress," said Andrews.
