Teacher arrest delays learner reports

Learners of Harvester Primary School's accused "sex pest" teacher will only get their report cards next term. 

This, after school issued a letter out to the parents on Wednesday informing them of delays due the 35-year-old former teacher facing charges of sexual grooming of minor boy in Grade 7 at the same school, after she allegedly sent him explicit images of herself.

Following the teacher's arrest on June 13 and subsequent resignation, the school added that they are actively looking for a replacement.

The letter reads: “Currently we are actively advertising for the Grade R educator position and we are committed to finding a qualified educator for Grade R1. However, due to current circumstances we will be postponing the issuing of the Grade R1 assessment report until next term. We believe this will allow us to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of your child’s progress. We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate these changes. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.”

The teacher appeared in the Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court earlier this week for her bid for bail.

The court heard that the State would oppose her release for her own safety and due to the public interest.

The magistrate pointed out that given that she would not undermine the proper functioning of the criminal justice system, she should not remain in custody.

The magistrate said: “The courts are required to lean in favour of granting bail… the State doesn’t worry about the child’s safety or other children.

“It looks like the State has no grounds to oppose her release. Your main reason for no release is because of the public interest.”

The case was postponed to July 1.
