The Western Cape is bracing for damaging winds and rough seas this weekend, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a yellow level 4 warning linked to a cold front expected to make landfall on Friday.

The warning includes forecasts of strong gale force north-westerly winds along the Western Cape coastline. Conditions are expected to begin moderating from Saturday afternoon.

According to City disaster risk management spokesperson, Sonica Lategan, the weather could result in widespread disruption, especially in coastal areas and fire-prone zones.

“The strong-winds may lead to uprooted trees, damage to roofs, and an increased risk of runaway fires. Coastal activities may be disrupted, and residents are urged to take precautions”, Lategan said.

She advised residents to secure loose items on their properties, such as outdoor furniture and garden equipment, which could be lifted or damaged by wind. Additional risks include damage to garage doors, sliding doors and windows.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution as strong winds may cause obstructions in the road, including fallen trees or flying debris.

Weather-related emergencies can be reported to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.
