A grade 11 learner attending Cedar High School in Mitchell's Plain has been left in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times while on his way home from school on Tuesday afternoon.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, Norman Jantjies, said the learner was stabbed in the lung, arm and head.

“He was allegedly stabbed by two former learners from the same school. According to reports, it is not known whether the victim is part of any grouping but the alleged perpetrators are apparently known to be members of a gang," Jantjies said.

"His situation is quite critical so he's receiving treatment at a local hospital.

"Unfortunately, this is not the first time that we've had gang activity associated with this and other schools in Mitchell's Plain.

"We trust that SAPS and other law enforcement agencies will increase visibility in the area.

"As the CPF, we wish that government will endorse and support the gang intervention strategy that is being developed by local stakeholders so that we can begin to see real change in our areas.

"We furthermore urge the City of Cape Town to fast track the installation of surveillance cameras in Mitchell's Plain and open the planned operations room in the town centre.”

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, said the department is aware of the incident.

Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said an assault to cause grievous bodily harm case was registered for further investigation.

“Mitchell's Plain police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a stabbing incident on Tuesday afternoon, 22 April 2025, on the corner of Weltevrede and Spine Roads, where a 17-year-old learner was stabbed.

"According to reports the victim was walking home when he was approached by two suspects who attacked him. The victim sustained stab wounds to his body and was taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. Arrests are yet to be made," said Twigg.

He urged anyone with any information about the incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
