Police and K-9 unit officers have unearthed skeletal remains in Witsands, Atlantis, on Friday afternoon, following a tip-off about a shallow grave.
The remains, dressed in black clothing were discovered in a bushy area. Investigators are now working to determine if they belong to a missing person from the community.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that the K-9 unit identified the burial site, with a human limb being the first part of the body recovered.
"Atlantis police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified person whose remains were found on March 7, 2025, at about 2.15pm," Van Wyk said.
"A case of murder has been opened, and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death"
"The scene was visited, and the K-9 Unit was dispatched to the scene. The search and rescue dog positively reacted to the area, and digging revealed the skeletal remains of a leg. Digging was halted for Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) to continue processing the scene. At present, the body is unknown.
“This still has to be confirmed when the body is unearthed and the face can be recognised. DNA analysis will be utilised.”
