Cape Town - The Animal Welfare Society of Stellenbosch (AWSS) has had a record-breaking month with 96 dogs adopted in the past few weeks.

What made this record especially rewarding was that in February its kennels had reached capacity with more than 140 dogs in its care at one time.

Jessica Perrins, head of fundraising and communications, said: “Ninety-six adoptions in one month is an incredible milestone to have achieved. This record-breaking number demonstrates how deeply our community cares – and the same goes for our incredible AWSS staff and dedicated volunteers.”

While celebrating the achievement, shelter staff aimed for another successful month, she said.

“April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month, and the AWSS will be running an adoption promotion which reduces adult dog and cat adoption fees to R750. Adoption includes sterilisation, initial vaccinations (up to date of adoption) and microchipping,” Perrins said.

The society has been a lifeline to thousands of animals in need since 1956. Last year, it took in more than 1 200 unwanted, neglected, and abused dogs.

AWSS is located in Devon Valley Road, Stellenbosch. The shelter is open for adoptions Monday – Sunday 10am to 3pm. For more information, call 021 883 9129 or visit www.awss.co.za
