One dead, scores displaced in Pelican Park fire
Cape Town - One person has died after sustaining serious injuries in a fire which broke out in the Phumlani Village informal settlement in Pelican Park on Sunday morning.
Ten informal structures were destroyed in the blaze, leaving more than 40 people displaced - many of whom are now pleading for relief after losing all their personal belongings in the fire.
City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Theo Layne said emergency services responded to the fire at 5:26am.
"One adult female sustained fatal burns. No other injuries were reported. More than 40 persons were left homeless," Layne said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
"The incident has been handed over to SAPS for further investigation," said Layne.
It's the second fatal fire incident in the city this weekend. On Saturday, three unidentified people perished in a house fire in Phillipi East.
