George - George's “Go” bus service has been suspended in the wake of violent protests which saw four coaches set alight.
Police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie said that on Wednesday afternoon, men allegedly belonging to the local taxi association had targeted the buses.
In the past, the taxi association has been at loggerheads with the transport department over the introduction of the bus service which travels along George's well-known taxi routes.
On Thursday morning, the situation was calm but police were still patrolling.
George's mayor Charles Stander said that the Go George bus service had been suspended until the “situation has been fully defused”.
“We are seriously concerned about the residents who won't have transport to work and to school tomorrow, but this situation has to be handled with great care,” he said in a statement.
“We can assure the public we are consulting at the highest level about the events.”
