Omoda is quickly becoming a familiar name on South African roads, and after spending a week with the brand’s latest arrival, the all-new mid-size C7, it’s clear the company is serious about stepping up its game.
Slotting between the entry-level C5 X Series and the flagship C9, the C7 aims to blend style, technology and everyday practicality into one compelling mid-size SUV package.
Bold design
The first thing that struck me about the C7 was its bold, futuristic styling. Up front, Omoda’s signature frameless X-shaped grille gives the SUV an aggressive stance, complemented by slim LED headlights and integrated daytime running lights that make a strong visual statement, especially at night.
Red-painted brake calipers and 19-inch wheels on the petrol variant add a touch of sportiness, while the SHS plug-in hybrid ups the ante with striking 20-inch alloys.
Under the bonnet, the petrol-powered C7 is fitted with a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 145kW and 290Nm.

Two powertrains, two personalities
Under the bonnet, the petrol-powered C7, which we spent time with, is fitted with a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 145kW and 290Nm, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Around town, the setup feels smooth and responsive, with enough punch to make overtaking effortless. The throttle may be a tad too responsive, especially for low-speed manoeuvres such as parking in tight spaces.
Omoda claims an average fuel consumption of 7.5L/100km; a figure that is achievable if you’re light on the throttle.
For those looking to dip into electrification, the C7 SHS plug-in hybrid promises both performance and efficiency. Combining a 1.5-litre turbo engine with an electric motor, the setup pushes out a combined 255kW and 525Nm.
The hybrid system offers an all-electric range of about 105km, perfect for daily commutes, while the total range stretches to roughly 1,200km.
Charging the SHS is also quick: Omoda says it can go from 30 to 80% in just 20 minutes on a 40kW fast charger, or to full in just under three hours on a standard 6.6kW home charger. It’s clear that Omoda is positioning this as a bridge between traditional combustion and full EV ownership.
Tech-savvy interior
Inside, the C7’s cabin feels premium and thoughtfully designed. The 2,720mm wheelbase translates to generous legroom in both rows. The boot space is also practical, measuring 614 litres in the 1.6 TGDI and 537 litres in the SHS. For the adventure seekers, both models can tow up to 1,250kg.
Materials and finishes are impressive for this segment. Black leather upholstery with heated and ventilated front seats and a driver’s memory function all come fitted as standard. The minimalist layout is dominated by two displays - an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 15.6-inch infotainment screen that houses most of the vehicle’s controls.
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity make smartphone integration seamless, while the Sony sound system (eight speakers in the petrol, twelve in the SHS) delivers a crisp audio experience.
The wireless charging pad and ambient lighting round off the high-tech feel.

Safety and driver assistance
Safety tech is another strong point. The C7 comes loaded with up to 21 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, lane-keep assist, and a 540-degree panoramic camera.
There’s even a “door opening warning” system that alerts you if it’s unsafe to exit - a small but thoughtful touch for city driving, especially if you have young children.
Standard safety features include a full suite of airbags, ABS, ESP and brake assist. It’s reassuring to see such a comprehensive safety setup at this price point.
Pricing
The C7 line-up is competitively priced, starting at R539,900 for the 1.6 TGDI Luxury, R589 900 for the 1.6 TGDI Elegance, and R689 900 for the SHS plug-in hybrid.
Each model comes backed by Omoda’s warranty and service plan structure, including a 10-year/1-million km engine warranty for the first owner and five years of roadside assistance.
The SHS’s battery pack is also covered by a 10-year/unlimited km warranty, which should ease any long-term ownership concerns.
Verdict
After a week behind the wheel, the Omoda C7 feels like a strong statement of intent from the brand.
It’s stylish, well-equipped, and blends performance with efficiency in a way that’s well-suited to South African buyers looking for something fresh and future-forward.
