The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, which is one of South Africa’s most popular SUVs, has already been replaced on global markets by the vehicle we currently know as the Tiggo Cross.

Yet given its popularity on the local market and its budget-friendly price tag, which starts at R269,900 for the 1.5 LiT manual, the local importer opted to continue marketing the older model to local customers, while positioning the newer one above it.

However, Chery has just launched a new base version of the Tiggo Cross, in the form of the 1.5 LiT derivative that now starts at R279,900 in manual form and R309,900 as a CVT.

Given how closely it is priced to the Tiggo 4 LiT models, many are questioning where this leaves the older-generation Tiggo 4.

The newcomer is powered by a normally aspirated 1.5-litre engine.

IOL reached out to Chery South Africa, whose official spokesperson said: “Other markets no longer run the Tiggo 4 Pro as we know it - we are therefore considering phasing out this derivative in the longer term.”

While this indicates that the current Tiggo 4 will still be around for the foreseeable future, Chery is evidently preparing for its eventual discontinuation through the downward expansion of the Cross lineup.

Internationally, Chery is also said to be working on new SUV models that slot below the Tiggo 4 / Cross, but these have yet to be officially revealed.

What does the new Tiggo Cross LiT have to offer?

The biggest point of departure with the new entry model is its engine.

Whereas other versions of the Tiggo Cross are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, which produces 108kW and 210Nm, the LiT model makes do with a normally aspirated 1.5-litre unit that delivers 83kW and 170Nm. It is paired with either a five-speed manual or CVT transmission.

Synthetic leather seats are fitted as standard.

Although a few interior features have been omitted to keep the price down, the LiT still comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a reverse camera, push-button start, keyless entry, smart voice assist, cruise control, faux leather seat upholstery and LED headlights.

Safety features include front and side airbags (four in total) as well as stability and traction control systems, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

The 1.5 LiT is sold with a five-year or 60,000km service plan and five-year/150,000km warranty.
