The Nissan X‑Trail has reached a 25-year milestone globally, with the popular SUV maintaining a steady presence in South Africa since its introduction in 2001.
Almost 50 000 units have been sold locally, making it one of the Japanese brand’s longer-running models in the country’s SUV segment.
Positioned as a practical family SUV, the X-Trail has built its reputation around cabin space, flexible seating and the ability to travel comfortably across mixed road conditions.
Nissan Africa's head of Communication, Brand and Customer Experience, Ramy Mohareb, said the anniversary reflects the model’s continued popularity among local buyers.
“This is a special vehicle that has been a favourite family and adventure car in South Africa. It is really a vehicle that defies ordinary,” he said.
Global launch local success
The X-Trail name reflects its intended role, with “X” representing extreme activities and “Trail” highlighting its ability to travel on rough surfaces.
When the model was first introduced in 2001, Nissan positioned it as a practical SUV alternative to traditional ladder-frame 4x4s.
Over four generations, the X-Trail has expanded its presence globally, selling more than eight million units worldwide.
From the third generation onwards, the model was also introduced in the United States under the Rogue nameplate, where it remains one of Nissan’s best-selling vehicles.
Daring Africa
The X-Trail’s versatility was also highlighted during the Daring Africa expedition, an 8,000-kilometre journey across eight countries from Rosslyn in Pretoria to Cairo in Egypt.
It served as the support vehicle for the expedition’s medical team while travelling alongside a convoy of Nissan Navara bakkies.
During the journey, the vehicle covered the full distance across a range of terrain and road conditions as part of the support fleet.
South African specification
The X-Trail range is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 135kW and 244Nm paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Ground clearance is rated at 211mm, while the SUV offers a braked towing capacity of 2,000kg.
The local range consists of Visia, Acenta and Acenta Plus derivatives.
Visia and Acenta models feature an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a five-seat layout. Luggage capacity is rated at 585 litres with the rear seats in place.
The Acenta adds 18-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and an Around View Monitor camera system.
The Acenta Plus introduces a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display with integrated navigation, as well as a head-up display.
The Acenta Plus is also available with a seven-seat configuration, giving the X-Trail the option of carrying larger families.
Additional features include a terrain drive mode for uneven surfaces and larger 19-inch alloy wheels.
With 25 years on the market and four generations behind it, the X-Trail continues to form part of Nissan’s global SUV line-up while maintaining a consistent formula of space, practicality and everyday usability.
