Chinese auto giant Chery is aiming to make a big impact in the bakkie space.

Following in the footsteps of the Hilux-sized Himla bakkie comes this bold new prototype that paves the way for what will likely be the company’s new flagship bakkie.

Revealed at Chery’s recent hybrid showcase event in Australia, the KP31 Ute Concept previews a production model that will launch in that market during the fourth quarter of 2026.

While its rugged looks, with a front end taking inspiration from the Ford Bronco, will certainly turn heads, that’s not its only claim to fame.

The concept is nearly 300mm longer than the Hilux-sized Himla.

The KP31 production model will be the world’s first diesel-electric powered plug-in hybrid bakkie.

Full details of the new powertrain remain under wraps, but Chery has disclosed that the system will feature a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine and that it will offer “class-leading” thermal efficiency, rated at 47%.

More importantly, it is said to be 10% more fuel efficient than a regular diesel-powered double cab, as well as 30% quieter on the road.

Furthermore, the bakkie will boast a one-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

A petrol-powered PHEV derivative is expected to join the line-up in 2027.

Bigger than the Himla

Measuring 5,610mm in length, with a width of 1,920mm, the concept is almost 300mm longer than the Chery Himla bakkie.

The concept also features some interesting load-bay solutions, although it’s not clear whether these will feature in the production model.

The concept has a highly variable load space.

But will it come to South Africa?

Although not officially confirmed by Chery, which is set to become a local manufacturer this year, international media sources have hinted that the KP31 production model is indeed on the cards for our market, although it’s unlikely to arrive before 2027.

Interestingly, Chery is also working on a rather interesting seven-seat ‘convertible’ pick-up, which is said to be based on a unibody platform. This means the Chinese firm will offer at least three bakkies to consumers in international markets.
