How to apply for an adult matric in 2026

Partnered Content|Published

With the 2025 matric results released last week, thousands of South Africans are reassessing their next steps.

While many learners are celebrating, others are facing the reality of incomplete results or unmet requirements. As for adults who never finished school, the release has once again highlighted the value of a second chance.

For those looking to complete or improve their matric qualification this year, Adult Matric remains a recognised and accessible pathway.

Who Qualifies to Apply?

To register for Adult Matric in 2026, applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Be 21 years or older
  • Have passed Grade 9 or higher
  • Have an incomplete matric or failed one or more subjects
  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident

Candidates who previously passed certain matric subjects can carry those credits forward and only rewrite the subjects they did not pass.

When Can You Register in 2026?

Adult Matric registrations are administered by the Department of Basic Education through provincial education departments.

  • Registration for the June 2026 examination is currently underway or closing soon in some provinces
  • Registration for the November 2026 examination generally opens in the first half of the year

Applicants are advised to confirm deadlines with their provincial education department, as late registrations are not accepted.

How to Apply for Adult Matric

The application process involves the following steps:

  • Select your subjects

Candidates may register for a minimum of three and a maximum of six subjects.

  • Complete the registration forms

Forms are available from provincial education offices or approved examination centres.

  • Submit supporting documents
  • A certified copy of your ID
  • Your highest school report or statement of results
  • Proof of residence, depending on the province
  • Pay the required fees

Fees differ per province and depend on the number of subjects registered.

  • Submit before the deadline

Applications received after the closing date will not be processed.

Can You Study Through a College?

Yes. Many private colleges and adult learning centres offer Adult Matric preparation programmes. These institutions provide structured tuition, learning material and exam preparation support.

However, candidates are urged to ensure that any college or centre they choose is properly registered and accredited.

Self-study is also an option for those who prefer a more flexible approach.

Subjects Available for Adult Matric

Common Adult Matric subjects include:

  • English (Home Language or First Additional Language)
  • Afrikaans
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Sciences
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
  • Geography
  • History

Subject availability may vary depending on the examination centre.

Why Adult Matric Remains Important

For many adults, completing matric is more than just a certificate. It can unlock access to:

  • Further education and training opportunities
  • Learnerships and skills development programmes
  • Improved job prospects
  • Personal confidence and long-term career growth

With the latest matric results now out, Adult Matric offers a practical alternative for those ready to keep moving forward.
