While the Megacy is officially in celebration mode following the pre-order launch of a brand-new AKA apparel collection, the excitement has been heavily overshadowed by a wave of disappointment.

The range, which aims to offer fans a tangible way to honour the late rapper’s impact in the hip hop landscape, leans into a high-end streetwear aesthetic featuring imported 100% organic combed cotton and premium embroidered finishes.

However, for many fans, the premium nature of the drop comes with a price tag that feels more like a barrier than a tribute.

The collection’s centrepiece, the iconic oversized purple hoodie synonymous with the Supa Mega, is retailing for a staggering R2 000, while graphic tees like The Legend and The Punisher are priced at R1 200 each.

Even The Megacy Tee, which boldly carries the words "Megacy Over Everything", has left some fans feeling that "everything" includes their entire monthly budget.

While AKA’s daughter, Kairo Forbes, championed the launch with a heartfelt Instagram post where she expressed her gratitude for the love shown to her father, the comments on AKA's Instagram page quickly turned into a heated debate over affordability.

Supporters like @a.ide.n_l.am.ar_17 and @jonathan_lubumbe focused on remembering him, while a vocal segment of the fanbase accused the rollout of being out of touch.

@thatboystush commented: "These prices are insane, stop using his memory for this, he wouldn't have liked this at all, AKA wouldn't have made those t-shirts that expensive, let's be realistic."

@nkosana_ibelievegod wrote: "We not trying to tell you how much it should cost, but I was really looking out to buying something. And please don't try me with that, I'm not the target market line. This is Kulture, I thought that was the motto."

The sentiment was further soured by users like @pluto_da_biggest_, who dismissed the drop as a "cash grab".

"Really needed new music instead yalls are cash-grabbing 🙄🫩," they shared.

@keen_passion said: "The price is highly insane 😭💔."
