KZN worried about rise of Covid-19 infections in neighboring EC

CAPE TOWN - The Health MEC in KwaZulu-Natal, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu says they are worried about the fluctuating numbers in the province and the rise of Covid-19 infections in neighboring Eastern Cape.

The province continues to be the second highest in the number of laboratory-confirmed cases countrywide and contributes 17 percent of the total cases countrywide.

Ethekwini District consistently records the highest number of new cases daily and contributes approximately half of the total laboratory-confirmed cases provincially.

“We have been emphasizing to our people to keep the Covid-19 protocols; wearing masks, handwashing with soap or sanitizing and social distance. The lingering threat of a second wave of Covid- 19 infections, especially given that there has been a rise of infections in one of the neighboring provinces,”

“If we are not careful we could also find ourselves in that position. We need to get used to this new normal. It is the only way to beat this pandemic. Despite the numbers having decreased, we need to emphasise that Covid-19 is not yet over,,” Simelane-Zulu said.

The fluctuating numbers in the province have been fluctuating, that shows that the virus is still here, said the MEC who also called on the public to heed all the Covid-19 protocols especially when attending events.

“Those of us who host other ceremonies, such as events or weddings, must ensure that their patrons are protected. Many people have passed away after attending funerals in rural areas because there has been less adherence to safety protocols, such as the wearing of masks, washing of hands, and social distancing. We are pleading with our people to ensure that we vanquish this disease by following these practices," the MEC said.
