Why the new winter menu at Time Out Market is Cape Town's best comfort food crawl
The winter menu will be available until September.

Look, we all know the drill. The second the Cape Town wind starts howling, and the rain hits the windows, we cancel our plans and hibernate.
But this year, there is a very delicious reason to actually leave the house. Time Out Market at the V&A Waterfront has just launched its new winter menu.
And, honestly, it’s exactly what the Mother City needs right now. I went through the old power station to see if it lived up to the hype, and I’m happy to report that the "winter blues" don’t stand a chance against a table full of this food.
Forget "bland", we’re doing bold
There’s been a lot of talk online lately about Cape Town restaurants playing it too safe and catering to a "European palate" (translated: food with no kick). But the vibe here is different. They’re leaning into big, messy, indulgent flavours that actually taste like home.
Russ Meyer, the general manager at the market, put it perfectly: "It’s the kind of food you crave when the temperature drops."
He’s not wrong. Instead of just one menu, you’ve got the city’s top chefs all in one room. It’s like a greatest-hits album of the city's best comfort food.
If you're heading there (and you should), here is the lowdown on the dishes that actually matter: The "I can’t believe it’s a salad" bowl from NØSH Café.
I know, I know. Who eats salad in winter? But Joel Singer has made this thing a beast. It’s packed with roasted butternut, beetroot, grilled brinjal, and cumin chickpeas. It’s topped with goat’s feta and pomegranate, making it super filling and easy on the wallet.
It’s a solid 8/10. Just a warning, it’s a filling dish; you might not have room for dessert.
The showstopper: Goan prawn curry
This dish from Kapoochka is a 10/10, no notes. It’s a saffron and coconut curry that is rich, deeply spiced, and warming. In a country that loves its curry, this one stands out.
The spice kick is real, and it’s the perfect antidote to a grey day.
The Goan Prawn Curry from KAPOOCHKA earns an unrivalled 10/10.

The fresh classic, pan-roasted linefish
If you want something that feels healthy but still satisfying, go for this Opa! dish. It’s served with golden baby potatoes and capers. It’s bright and zesty, and it feels like it’s actually boosting your immune system.
The best part about the market in winter is that you don’t have to pick just one thing. You can grab a salami tartufo pizza from Yard, some creamy alfredo from Carne, or enchiladas suizas from Una Mas to share with the table, from Italian to Mexican, something for everyone.
And you have to finish with Unframed Ice Cream’s seasonal waffle; it’s got honeycomb, dark chocolate, and candied pecans. It’s basically a hug in dessert form. If you’re looking for a spot that balances the "indulgence" of ‘fine dining’ lifestyle with the "real-world affordability" every South African is hunting for right now, this is it.

Between the live music, the quiz nights, and the ability to stay warm while moving among the city's best kitchens, the Market has become the ultimate winter social hub.
It’s affordable, it’s vibrant, and it’s a total win for anyone tired of the same old winter routine.
The menu is running from now until September. Check out the app for the event line-up, but mostly, just go for the curry. Trust me.
