The long-running tradition of civvies day is a common practice where schools allow children to dress up for a particular day, and they pay a certain amount. In my day, it used to be R5 and more if you were in uniform.

Monies collected from civvies days are often used for various fundraising activities. Valentine's is coming, and it means that many schools in South Africa might have learners dress in casual clothing.

Many parents try to avoid buying new items for these special dress-up days, especially for something that might be worn once.

Here are some tips to help parents put together the best outfits for their children.

Shop their wardrobe first

Before buying anything new, parents should check what their kids already own. A red T-shirt, pink dress, white sneakers or even heart-print pyjamas can easily be styled into a Valentine’s look with minimal effort.

Focus on colour, not costumes

Valentine’s Day is more about the colour palette than themed outfits. Reds, pinks, whites and even soft purples instantly set the mood, without the need for novelty clothing that won’t be worn again.

Comfort always comes first

Kids should still be able to run, play and nap comfortably. Stretchy fabrics, breathable cottons and soft knits not only save money long-term (they last longer) but prevent parents from buying replacements due to discomfort.

Accessorise to elevate the look

Accessories are the cheapest way to transform an outfit. Think hair clips, headbands, bows, fun socks, a red beanie or even heart-shaped sunglasses—small touches that make a big impact.

DIY personal touches

Iron-on patches, fabric paint or simple embroidery can turn a plain T-shirt into a Valentine’s Day moment. It’s affordable, creative and a fun bonding activity for parents and kids.

Let kids have a say

Allowing children to choose how they style their outfit, within budget, reduces waste and ensures the clothes actually get worn again.
