Looking for something different to do in Johannesburg after dark this festive season?

The Festival of Lights at Joburg Zoo is back, transforming one of the city’s most loved spaces into a colourful nighttime experience filled with glowing displays, music and plenty of festive energy. It is the kind of outing that works just as well for wide-eyed kids as it does for adults who want to soak up the holiday atmosphere without travelling far.

As the sun sets, the zoo comes alive with life-size illuminated animals, glowing trees and colourful light installations around every corner.

It is the kind of place where kids run ahead in excitement and adults find themselves stopping for photos just as often.

The atmosphere is festive, fun and easy-going, making it a great outing for the whole family.

There is more than just lights to enjoy. Live music, dance and energetic performances add to the buzz, while food and craft stalls make it easy to turn the evening into a full experience.

Expect plenty of movement, colour and festive vibes as performers keep the energy high throughout the night.

The Festival of Lights runs until January 4 2026, and is open from Thursday to Sunday between 7 pm and 10 pm.

It takes place at Joburg Zoo, and children under the age of three enter for free.

Tickets are priced at R75 for kids aged 3 to 12, R100 for pensioners and R175 for kids 12 and older as well as adults.

Camp chairs are welcome, so you can settle in and enjoy the performances comfortably. Just remember that no food, alcohol, cooler boxes, pets, balloons or balls are allowed inside.

Artists and performers to look out for include DJ Prince, Bongi Archi, Drumming Session, Soulful Xplosion with Lindelani Mkhize, Madagascar Jr, Tribhangi Dance Company and Blaq Diamond.

If you are looking for a festive night out that keeps the kids entertained and lets adults soak up the season too, the Festival of Lights at Joburg Zoo is a glowing December favourite.
